elephants walking thru downtown providence

The circus is in town – which means the elephants made their annual walk from the train station to the downtown arena. I kept my mouth shut and suspended judgement of treating intelligent creatures as performers… I simply tried to document the bizarre sight of these huge and magnificent animals marching down city streets with local architecture in the background. I learned the elephants are all females because they are easier to train and not as temperamental as males.

Excellent job. I never knew that the elephants walked from the train. I like how you mixed wider shots with close up detail shots.

I went to the circus in D.C. for the past two years with a friend’s children. This year I went with eyes wide open about the numbers of African elephants in the wild and the breeding program for the circus. I don’t think you could pay me any amount to go again. The whole thing is so sad. Your photos speak volumes.

These are great photos, Peter. I actually studied elephants in Zimbabwe in 1998 and you really captured the essence of these beautiful creatures. The shot of the eye was particularly touching.
